Two recent reports issued by separate watchdog agencies spotlight data privacy and security challenges at the Department of Veterans Affairs.
A Nov. 13 report by the VA Office of Inspector General says a privacy policy change made in May 2016 for how the Veterans Benefits Administration processes veterans' requests for their claims records put at risk for identity theft the personally identifiable information of "millions" of third parties mentioned in veterans' records. Those include physicians and others involved in the care of a veteran, which in some cases could include more than 100 individuals.
